Artist: Mohsen NamJoo
Track: Strange Times
I found this guy interesting and ripped the press release word-for-word. Read it below
from the press release:
“Understatement of the century: Iran isn’t famous for its civil liberties. It’s this fact that makes the rise of uncompromising Iranian-born virtuoso Mohsen Namjoo so surprising. The self-described “class rebel of classical Iranian music,” a Venice-dwelling ex-pat the New York Times called the “Bob Dylan of Iran,” has blazed his own trail across three full-length releases in as many years. Trail blazing, of course, doesn’t always go over so well in Iran, where, after his latest release —October 2009’s frank, satirical invective OY— the musician was sentenced in absentia to a five-year jail term for supposedly deriding a portion of the Quran.
But while his music may invoke the ire of the Iranian Justice System, here in the states it’s being received with open arms. Later this month, Namjoo is set to make the trip to Los Angeles and grace the state at The Walt Disney Concert Hall for a special engagement called “Namjoo in A Minor.” Accompanying him on the 20th will be pianist Tara Kamangar, and a full band ready to support Namjoo’s innovative style of Iranian folk. For the uninitiated, that’s a brand that boldly blends respect for the past with elements of Western rock and blues. And while the music is a challenge in and of itself, the lyrics are what have landed Namjoo most of his Dylan-esque praise, mingling the classic works of Rumi, Hafez or Saadi with a sardonic wit and eye for irony, humor and humanity like no other. With his growing acclaim for his music and profile around the upcoming US activities, Mohsen is poised to take the role of musical ambassador that artists like Gilberto Gil and Youssou N’Dour currently play. Tickets are on sale now, and if you’re not in the LA area, stay tuned for a lot more developments from Mohsen’s camp in coming months”“A genius, a sort of Bob Dylan of Iran.” – New York Times
